Many people start having acne problems with the onset of puberty. This is most likely due to the large hormonal changes your body goes through in puberty. Unfortunately though, many people will continue having problems with acne on their face or bodies long into adulthood. That's because hormonal changes aren't the only reason or cause of acne, other things can contribute as well.
Acne is simply an infection on your skin. Usually it happens when oil builds up in hair follicles on your skin, which provides a haven for bacteria to live and breed. As your skin begins to be irritated by the bacteria build up, it will react in the form of inflammation and sores. Those inflamed sores are what we call acne.
Increased oil and bacteria on your skin can cause acne to appear, or worsen, and here are a few common scenarios of that oil and bacteria increasing:
1. Hormone imbalances can cause your skin to secrete higher levels of oil. These hormone imbalances can be caused by puberty, menstruation or ovulation in women, and stress. Poor health and eating habits can throw your hormones off balance too, so general health conditions or problems can also contribute to acne problems.
2. Poor hygiene habits. Since acne is caused by bacteria growth, it can be made worse simply by not washing your face and hands properly or frequently enough.
3. Dead skin cells. Bacteria can feed on the dead skin cells of your face and body. If you routinely exfoliate your skin, this could help reduce your acne problems.
4. Eating poorly. The "old wives tale" says chocolate causes acne, but that's not quite true. It's actually poor eating habits in general that can cause acne problems, because poor eating may encourage more oily skin, plus it lowers you're body's natural ability to fight bacteria, germs and infections.
So, if you're having problems with acne, think a bit about your own lifestyle. Try to determine what could be causing it. Are you severely stressed? Are you eating badly? Are you in poor health or maybe a little burnt out from working too much? If you can see any obvious reasons for your acne problems, try making a few personal changes to see if they help. You might also want to seek help from the family doctor or a professional dermatologist if you're unable to determine causes yourself, but knowing the most common causes of acne problems should give you great places to start clearing up the problems.
